Traditionally chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) has been the go to water treatment chemical for sanitising potable and waste waters from harmful pathogens. 

Recently safer, more environmentally friendly products are becoming popular.

One of these products is Chlorine Dioxide. Although it still has the word "Chlorine" in its name it doesn't behave chemically like chlorine. Chlorine is a very powerful oxidiser and oxidises almost everything it contacts and exchanges chloride atoms to the organic compounds it oxidises forming chlorinated hydrocarbons which can be harmful. Chlorine Dioxide is more selective in its oxidation process allowing lower dosages and no by-product formation. It breaks down into harmless chloride and water molecules. It is particularly useful in treating water that has considerable organic matter such as rainwater tanks and surface water storage (dams).
